Team Up for Christmas Party Games   by Gail Leino

Christmas is a special holiday, one that gives friends and family members the rare opportunity to catch up, break bread, play Christmas party games, and–of course–exchange those delightful Christmas Presents. The entertainment is the best part of the season, especially when the entire family plays Christmas themed party games. Children, parents, and grandparents can all take part in these Christmas games.

What Is In The Stocking?: To start off this fun Christmas Game, fill a large Christmas stocking with ornaments, then tie the open end with ribbon. Have all the family members sit in a circle, one person gets the stocking and touches it. Each player is allowed two minutes to guess and write down the contents of the stocking. The person who garners the greatest number of right answers wins the game, also winning all the treats inside the stocking. This is a great game for older people because it does not require much movement.

Drop The Snowball Game: Drop the Snowball is an interactive game involving grandparents and kids. This is a fun game because it tests how well grandparents and grandchildren work as a team for a common goal.

Give a white color ball or Christmas Ornament to each pair. Then, place a basket for each pair at the other end of the room with space between each basket. Each pair has to stand back to back with a ball tucked in between their backs. The goal is to move simultaneously towards the basket without the ball or ornament falling. The team that drops the ball or ornament must begin again, and the first team to drop the object in the basket will be declared the winner.

Christmas Charades: Charades is a classic game that everyone has played once before it seems. Instead of the typical charades game, include Christmas related objects (but not obvious ones like Santa Claus and snow).

Frosty the Snowball Toss: Pair the grandchildren and grandparents into teams. Using a large piece of cardboard, cut out a likeness of Frosty the Snowman with a hole cut out at the center. Use cotton balls wrapped in clear tape to give the effect of snowballs (marshmallows wrapped in plastic wrap are also a good choice). Use a bucket to hold the snowballs and place the cardboard cutout snowman on top of the bucket. Give each team a certain number of throws; the person who throws the most balls inside the basket wins.

Guess That Christmas Carol: Divide teams into groups of two for this fun musical game. Play numerous Christmas carols for all the groups involved. Have each group shout out the name of the song by playing 5 second snippets of each song. Have each group write what they think the song maybe. The group with the correct number of songs wins. Grandparents might have the advantage in the game because of their familiarity of songs from years passt.

Have a few extra Christmas party games on hand ready to go. You don’t have to play them all. However, be really just in case there is a big lull in the party.

Classic Christmas $7.94 For his third holiday album — he releases one every decade, more or less like clockwork — George Strait concentrates on the basics, something that’s evident from the very title of Classic Christmas. There’s not a new tune or obscurity among the album’s ten songs, as Strait relies heavily on carols like “Silent Night,” “Joy to the World,” and “O Come, All Ye Faithful,” adding a couple relatively newer standards like “Jingle Bells” and “Up on the Housetop” for balance. This makes Classic Christmas quite a bit different from 1999’s Merry Christmas Wherever You Are, which concentrated on brand-new tunes and secular favorites like “Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!,” “The Christmas Song,” and “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer” — songs that he pulled off nicely, but the simplicity of these standards is well suited for Strait’s warm, easygoing touch. Christmas $5.58 Glen Campbell has come a long way from his “Gentle On My Mind” and “Wichita Lineman” days in the ’60s, and it’s easy to forget just how big he was. Campbell managed to straddle both the country and pop fields, partially because his music was so mainstream, but also because he was a darn good singer with good songs. His mass popularity and winning vocals also made him the obvious candidate to put out several Christmas albums. Glen Campbell Christmas, issued in 2000 by Capital-EMI, repackages — in the oddest of fashions — a number of earlier recordings. The good thing is that most of these songs — “The Christmas Song,” “Pretty Paper,” and “Christmas Is for Children” — have been taken from Campbell’s classic (and best) holiday album, That Christmas Feeling. What makes this important is that, as of the end of 2004, the album was out of print in the U.S. and hard to find as an import. So…there are at least seven excellent Christmas songs on Glen Campbell Christmas. The others — like “Silent Night” and “I Believe in Christmas” — have been salvaged from latter-day, and much lesser, efforts. Christmas Is… $8.78 This 1972 holiday compilation, sponsored by Goodyear, featured performances by some of the most famous pop standard vocalists of the ’40s, ’50s and ’60s. Frank Sinatra is there, crooning his classic 1944 rendition of “White Christmas.” So is the smooth-voiced Bing Crosby, singing the Meredith Wilson tune “It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas.” Also included are “Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town,” sung by a chuckling Tony Bennett, Andy Williams’ take on “O Holy Night,” and the original Judy Garland recording of “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” taken from the soundtrack of Meet Me in St. Louis. Most of the songs are taken from previously released recordings, but there are a few that were laid down especially for this album. Among them are the Hillside Singers’ “Christmas Is” and the unmistakable Julie Andrews in a rendition of “Silent Night” that comes as close as possible to being the definitive version of that timeless carol. Filled with the sort of holiday classics that have been played in department stores for countless Decembers, Christmas Is… is a remarkably consistent compilation. The only songs to dip a little too heavily into seasonal schmaltziness are the title track and the Carpenters’ “Merry Christmas Darling.” Highly recommended. ~ Evan Cater, Rovi

Favourite Christmas Songs $13.58 It’s a pleasure to be able to recommend a collection of Christmas music without reservation. This album (as the title suggests) features favorites from the German-speaking world, so some songs may be unfamiliar to English-speaking audiences, but the arrangements are so tasteful and charming and the performances are so sophisticated while being natural and unmannered that only the most unadventurous traditionalist is likely to find fault with the selection. The CD features an attractive mix of familiar sacred songs, chorales, and carols, such as “Es ist ein Ros entsprungen,” “O du fröhliche,” “Still, still, still,” “Zu Bethlehem der Engel sprach” (The First Noel), “Bethlehem, du kleine Stadt” (O Little Town of Bethlehem), “Hört der Engel helle Lieder” (Angels We Have Heard on High), and “Stille Nacht” (Silent Night), in addition to the less well-known fare. The arrangements, by a variety of composers, respect the character of each piece while avoiding clichéd conventionality. Eckhard Weyand leads the chamber ensemble Collegium Instrumentale Stuttgart and the Stuttgarter Hymnus-Chorknaben, a choir of men and boys, in performances that are warm, pure and unaffected, ideally suited to the folk-like nature of the music.
