Christmas Can Be a Rough Holiday   by Laura Griffin

For many of us this year, Christmas may be more of a dreaded holiday than the happy joyous one we all look forward to each year. When money is tight, Christmas can be rough, that is unless you learn to be creative.

I realize not many people are in to crafts or any kind of needlework as in the past, but when money is tight you may need to think about it. Creating your own Christmas Traditions can be fun, and can involve the whole family.

One of the best ways to thwart the Grinch at Christmas time is to create homemade gifts. Even if you don’t know how to bake, a great Christmas present is to get a large jar and layer the dry ingredients for the recipient’s favorite cookie or muffins. If you are a great baker, then make cookies, candies, caramel corn, muffins or loaves of bread. Then all you will need is some decorated bags, boxes or tins to put them in.

If you can crochet or knit, you can always make hot pads and/or dishcloths. These are quick and easy to make especially if you are a novice at crocheting or knitting. What kitchen has too many hot pads? Or for that matter too many dishcloths? If you are a little better than a novice you can buy some inexpensive kitchen towels, cut them in half and make towel toppers for them. Don’t worry about not having patterns; you can find oodles of free crochet or knit patterns online. You can even find instructions online, so if there is a stitch you are not familiar with, you can learn to do it online.

One thing I found online was a crochet pattern for coasters. These coasters use an old CD in the middle of it. They will make great gifts. Get some yarn for a little over $2.00 at Wal-Mart that will match the color of their living room décor. If you have several people to make some coasters for, then you might want to choose a neutral color that will go with almost any color décor, but white. That color would be cream or off-white. Even a tan is a great neutral color. Coasters are something almost everyone will use, and the crocheted ones will work better than the ones you can buy in a store.

If you are not into crocheting or knitting, you might look into cross-stitch or the plastic canvas. If you are not sure what that it, just go to Annie’s Attic online and you will see what I am talking about. I have not done any of that type of craft yet, but I know it is simple and easy to do. There are several things you can make with the plastic canvas.

If you want some new Christmas Decorations, you can look at FaveCrafts Quick and Crafty. They will give you ideas on how to make some simple decorations. They will give you the list of items you will need. They have ideas on Christmas ornaments, Christmas centerpieces, and Christmas decorations.
